In the 1940s, two artificial water reservoirs were established along the river Dunajec in southern Poland: Lake Rożnowskie and Lake Czchowskie. Their lifespan was determined to be approximately 75 years. For decades the reservoirs were a popular vacation spot for millions of Poles, who in Communist times had been unable to travel abroad. Many state enterprises owned summer houses there. Sports and recreation centers were developed on the lakes, and people opened restaurants, dance clubs, and the like. Nevertheless, gradual silting over the years has led to the drying up and dying of the reservoir. The lifespan of both lakes seems to have come to an end.
