Om is a holy Hindu syllable believed to transmit a supernatural sound, causing the creation of the universe. The transcendental vibration of Om sets matter in motion, extracting a cascade of sounds that develop into forms and shapes. This is one of the references found in Katarzyna Hoffmann’s Musica Mundana. Alluding to ancient and medieval concepts of the harmony of the universe and music as a mathematical formula defining the movement of the heavenly spheres, Hoffmann’s project appeals with its mechanics. It is made up of three audiovisual works, precisely organizing the space of mutual interaction.

Hidden and separated from the rest of the ShowOFF exhibition, Hoffmann’s installation is like the artist’s private laboratory, testing ancient theories of contemporary technologies and her own poetic vision. In Hoffmann’s project, photography is situated somewhere between the potential of the motionless image and the kinetics of film. An image of an ancient map of the heavens rotating on its axis with the harmony of the spheres is juxtaposed with a horizontally shifting sound video projection. It has come about through the use of NASA recordings of sounds emitted by Mars and Venus. This projection of Hoffmann’s is a visual diagram describing sound and its existence in time. The third projection and element “driving” the installation space of the exhibition is an original interpretation of the tetractys, a Pythagorean figure describing the relationships of various tones in the theory of the music of the spheres, which create the basic harmonic structure: the octave. The turning wheel of the heavenly spheres, the vibrating triangular figure of the Pythagoreans, and the rectangular projected representation of the planets emanating a mechanical sound create a private cosmological impression of an artist seeking her own technique in the media of photography and film.
