At the beginning of Christianity, the Gyrovagi were wandering monks without fixed residence or leadership. Free from all dogmas, they were constrained by a strong link to nature and primitive matter. From wanderings and retreats in nature—those lonely periods that transform experience and lead to self-interrogation—Constantin Schlachter developed an ascetic and instinctive photography, following the way of thinking of the Gyrovagi. With his pictures he creates a sensorial fiction that resonates in the collective consciousness.

Between 2011 and 2015, Schlachter photographed his feelings by means of the landscape and its details. Using different media (cameras and microscopes), and through analog and digital manipulations, he fixed the emotion he originally experienced, each medium and process corresponding to one specific state of mind. Paraboles (Parables) is an inner quest in mental landscapes, where the notions of micro/macro and organic/mineral are confused, thus forming a loop where subjects are constantly reinvented and transformed. As in an alchemical process, those treatments serve to reunify the opposites and permit the viewer to reach his or her own spiritual center.

The barrier of concrete spaceis punctured by the abnormal colors, subjects, and textures. In this obscure and natural noise, primeval sensations of the human being, maternal caves, and mystical creatures echo all around. The confrontation of these symbolic images creates a backcountry of the mind, leaving us to roam a mental realm dominated by nature.
